An account from a believer in a North African country:
I am writing to share a distressing incident that occurred to a friend of mine, whom I shall refer to as “Marta.” Marta is a young 20-year-old residing in a big city. Recently, she was on the subway, simply going about her business and peacefully traveling from one city to another, when she was suddenly accosted by two elderly Muslim women dressed in full face veils and a younger woman.
These individuals proceeded to physically assault Marta, pulling her hair and hurling insults and profanities at her. They accused her, as a Christian, of being an infidel for not adhering to beliefs in Mohamed. They condemned her to hell for her faith in Jesus Christ. They further criticized her attire, deeming it immodest and indicating that she, along with all Christians, would suffer in hell for their supposed sins.
Despite the crowded subway car, no one came to Marta's defense. Several Muslim passengers in the car instead joined in with the attackers, cheering on their actions. Marta was left in a state of shock, fear, and profound distress. When she approached a police officer at the next station the officer informed her that he could not get involved, showing the lack of rights, freedoms, and justice in this country.
The trauma Marta endured has left her shattered. She now lives in constant fear, feeling unsafe and unable to venture outside her home. As she shared with me, my heart ached at the thought of the vulnerability faced by my own sisters, knowing that any one of them could potentially find themselves in a similar harrowing situation.
In times like these, we are reminded of the challenges inherent in living as Christians within an Islamic community. Despite facing persecution and adversity, let us draw strength from the words of Psalm 46:1 – "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
May we find solace in our faith and continue to stand firm in our beliefs, trusting in the steadfastness of our Lord.
Please pray that the Lord would open the eyes of Marta’s tormentors, for protection for all the Christians living in Muslim nations, and that the Lord would give Marta peace and serenity.
